A Sick Day with Sally

This was the day she was mostly better and I was still well.

Thought we'd take a break from the nonstop movies and computer games for a little orange juice party in the front room.

It was a good distraction, but we're pretty much back to Netflix again.

We're just having one big sick week over here (started with Sally, then August, now me (and still August who has a little case of pneumonia (antibiotics and breathing treatments seem to be working but just the diagnosis of pneumonia scares me)).

Hoping for less stuffy noses and more smiles tomorrow.

A Real, Live Toy

Not that he seems to mind the craziness,
but I'm sure August is grateful that at least one of his siblings is mellow with him.

Sunshine and Cartography

Our nasty 50 degree weather finally left.
(don't want to hear it, Utah, 50 is freezing)

Sally and I celebrated with bike/scooter rides to the library 2 days in a row.

Felt so good.
Looked good, too...love that the ocean is in view (if just barely).

And it was nice not getting lost thanks to Sally's detailed map.

Also nice coming home to read some new books.
Even if the "reading" involved made up stories about pants being pooped.

Lancer Basketball

The novelty of Tiger Scouts has already started to wear off for Drew.
I don't even get as excited to see his little self in that uniform.
So it's good the pack still does fun things to keep a little spark alive.

One of the boy's dad is a coach on the high school b-ball team.
He was able to get the boys some special privileges during a game a couple weeks ago.
They got to be in the locker room for the pre-game pep talk,
be on the court with the players for the National Anthem,
and meet the cheer-leaders.

Frederick

Although there are some August(ish) books out there,
Justin's aunt Jeane Ann's suggestion of Frederick (after August's middle name) is my favorite.
I'm happy that she's keeping the baby name book tradition alive.

And lucky him, he has two copies...
one in German (ordering mistake on my part),
and one in English.
So multi-cultured.

August in January

Do you see what that little blurry hand is doing?
It's holding on to that ring.
As in, it's not just resting or flailing all over the place.

And sometimes that little hand reaches for my face and pulls my hair.

And grabs for Justin's nose.

2 more days and he's 4 months old.

Not sure we were quite done with the newborn stage,
but whatever stage this is...we like it, too.

Ditchers

Just outside our hotel...ready for Day 1 of our 2-day visit to Disneyland.
Ditched a little school last week to go.

She thought she was a celebrity on the train.

 One of her favorite rides.
Conveniently always has a short line.

Learned to sleep through anything.

August was added to the bed for effect. Did it work?
PS Those Halo sleep sacks are ugly but awesome.

Nonstop teacups.

Love the Small World ride at Christmas.
This was the end of day 2.
We were all cold and ragged,
(I'm in Justin's military issued fleece)
but still sad to leave.

Favorites:

It being August's first trip. He slowed us down and didn't get what was going on, but it was still fun having him there. He was either wide eyed or asleep, not much in-between. First ride was Peter Pan.

The last hour before closing on Day 1, Sally, August, and I did: Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Dumbo, the carousel, Snow White, Pinnochio, and Alice in Wonderland. I think the boys did Splash Mountain like 4 times in that same hour.

Didn't eat one single treat the whole time. Satisfied my major sweet cravings with those mangoes with lime from the fruit cart. So good.

Least Favorites:

Boys had a couple whiny moments where they wanted to go back to school. What the.

Cold (but that part was worth it...scared some people away).

What We Were Really Doing at the RR Tracks

 Smushing pennies.

It's a strange addiction I have.

Giddy Up

Tami & Jay, 1999

Becky & Jeramy, 2000

Karen & Jared, 2001

If you want your very own piggy-back posed engagement session,
I have a few slots available.

Rachel & Jacob just took advantage of the offer:
(RR track location extra)

K but seriously...I just wanted to formally apologize to my sisters, friend Becky, and cousin Sara
(not pictured...but Sara if you find your picture I want it!)
for having you do that pose.

Rachel's is obviously a joke.

But, I distinctly remember thinking how good all the piggy back pictures turned out and
was excited to have people do that pose every time.

A Fresh Coat of Marker

 We colored for days.

Days.

And when we were done, it was a work of art.

But after a week of taking up the front room, it needed to be relocated.

So out back it went.

And then...

Less than 24 hours later...

It rained.
This little Black Friday bargain of a cardboard house is (almost) no more.

NYE

I finally got some visiting family to go to Torrey Pines with us...Rachel and her FIANCE Jacob.
Pardon all the pictures, it's kind of pretty there.
We had ourselves a nice little New Year's Eve (day) hike.
Or walk, more like it.

That night we partied hard with games
(who else got this for Christmas?)

and a good luck cake.
This might be a cross between a mardi gras king cake and a good luck cake.
This semi-made-up tradition consisted of a plastic baby, wrapped in foil, hidden in the cake batter.
Who doesn't like to find a baby in their cake?
Owen was determined and it only took him 3 slices to find it.
He now has good luck for the year.

That cake was delicious.
(chocolate chocolate chip bundt frosted with a layer of peanut butter and then chocolate glaze)
Thank you Danna for that recipe.

And then here's Miss Wide Awake at midnight.
She would've stayed up later if we let her.

No jumping in the ocean at midnight this year.
But we would like to thank our drunk neighbors for the awesome fireworks show
 (like real, legitimate fireworks),
and Jacob and Rachel for being the kids' personal entertainment committee.
